Using your cylinder safely
LPG is a safe fuel when it’s stored and connected properly. These are the habits that matter most. Keep this page bookmarked for anyone in your home who uses the cylinder.
If you smell gas
LPG has an added odour, often described as rotten eggs, so you can detect a leak.
- Don’t light anything, and don’t switch lights or appliances on or off.
- Close the cylinder valve if you can reach it safely.
- Open doors and windows to let the gas out.
- Leave the area and keep others away.
- From outside, call your local emergency number: 911 in the United States and Canada, 000 in Australia.
Everyday guidelines
Keep it upright
Always store and use the cylinder standing up, so only gas, not liquid, reaches the valve.
Give it air
Store cylinders outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, out of direct sun and away from heat, drains and basements.
Check for leaks
Brush soapy water on the connections with the valve open. Growing bubbles mean a leak: close the valve and don’t use it.
Inspect the hose
Look for cracks, stiffness or damage on the hose and regulator. Replace worn parts before connecting.
Close the valve after cooking
Turn the burner off, then close the cylinder valve when you’re done or leaving home.
Keep children away
Place the cylinder where children can’t reach the valve or play with the controls.
When your delivery arrives
- Check that the tamper seal on the valve is intact. If it’s broken, don’t accept the cylinder.
- Look for dents, rust or damage on the body and foot ring.
- Connect the regulator by hand to the fitting it’s designed for. Don’t force it.
- Run the soapy-water leak check before the first use.
